The strike occurred in the province’s Chakh district, according to the Afghan spokesman, Gen. Zahir Azimi, who said eight Afghan National Army troops were also wounded in the incident.
Azimi said an investigation was underway and that “the defense minister and all the staff of the defense ministry were saddened by the incident.”
A spokeswoman for the international forces in Afghanistan, Maj. Cathleen Snow, told The Associated Press in an email that five Afghan soldiers were accidentally killed in an operation in the country’s east. She did not specify whether aircraft were involved and whether the deaths were the result of an airstrike.
