Message from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe:

I held summit talks at the State Guest House with Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who was invited to Japan from Australia as an official guest.
I am exceptionally pleased that today our countries reached agreement in principle during our negotiations on the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement, or “EPA,” that began in 2007 when I was Prime Minister. In the area of security as well, we decided to launch negotiations towards a framework agreement on cooperation in the area of defense equipment and technology.
We will raise our strong Japan-Australia bilateral relations to a new and special relationship as strategic partners. I am truly delighted that Prime Minister Abbott and I were able to achieve such important results.
