Architect Suzuko Yamada’s gorilla-inspired steel Tokyo home establishes rhythms its towering garden

Japanese architect Suzuko Yamada’s suburban Tokyo home brings together an effusion of living trees with a network of bare steel pipes, enfolding a shape-shifting design that encourages flow between the split-level interior and the greenery outside. Responding to the space constraints of urban living and the changing needs of family life, Yamada found inspiration for the house’s form by observing the behavior of a family of gorillas. She noticed they all lived harmoniously together by creating both personal and community space, while seeking natural resting points in the forest.
