Costco Japan brings steady income to rural homes

The Japanese mayor of the rural town of Meiwa has welcomed the benefits a newly opened Costco has brought to the local economy. The US big-box discounter has been offering higher pay than the prefecture’s minimum wage, and has attracted over 10,000 visitors to the area daily. But small businesses have been struggling to keep up with Costco’s competitive pay, amid rising inflation in the country.
