It might be hard to imagine now, but the corner of Bay Street and Dundas Street used to be the centre of ‘The Ward’ By the late 1800s, it was a thriving, diverse working-class community. The first stop for non-Anglo immigration. East Europeans and Italians came and went. Formerly-enslaved Americans mixed with Russians. Black and Jewish businesses thrived side by side. And, it was the home of the original Chinatown. It was multicultural Toronto, 19th century-style. By 1965, it was pretty much gone, being demolished over time. So while the neighbourhood may be lost, it’s not quite forgotten. This unforgettable moment is part of The T.O. You Don’t Know, a city-wide storytelling experience uncovering Toronto’s wildest forgotten histories.
