The beauty, passion and chaos of Naples

Home to over three million people, Naples and its sprawling suburbs vibrate with the energy of the active volcanic landscape, embracing Mount Vesuvius – known to locals as Signore, Lord of Nature – as if it were a benevolent mountain. Carried by the passion of its people, the Southern Italian city’s animated, untamed spirit mirrors the unpredictability of its geography, seen in the electric blue lights of its street shrines, the vibrant waters of the Gulf, the roar of scooters, and the fierce dedication of its football fans.

Capturing the distinct character of Naples on 16mm film, director Kevin Koch amplifies the textures, colors, and emotions that fuel the city for the short film Sotto Il Vesuvio. A love letter to the Neapolitan people, shot during the lively street celebrations that marked SSC Napoli’s home victory against Cagliari in August 2025, the film honors a place where football becomes a religion under the image of Diego Maradona – where chaos and beauty are inseparable, and faith and superstition flow together.
